Preparing Artwork for Large Format Printing: A Reseller’s Guide

Understanding Large Format Printing

What is Large Format Printing?

Large format printing refers to the production of prints that exceed standard sizes—typically larger than A3. These prints are ideal for high-visibility applications such as banners, exhibition stands, and large signage.

Where is Large Format Printing Used?

You’ll commonly see large-format prints in locations where they need to capture attention—trade shows, outdoor events, retail storefronts, and large public spaces. Their size ensures visibility from a distance, making them perfect for impactful promotional messaging.

How is it Different from Standard Printing?

Large format printing isn’t just bigger; it requires specialised equipment and specific considerations. Unlike standard print runs, large format printing uses advanced technology to ensure sharp detail and vibrant colours at a scale where imperfections can become more noticeable. At we1print, we only use cutting-edge equipment like our EFI VUTEK H5 and EFI VUTEK printers to achieve industry-leading results.

Preparing artwork for large format printing involves different settings, including file resolution, dimensions, and colour modes that ensure top-quality output.

1. Resolution and Image Quality

Resolution Requirements

For large format prints, achieving the correct resolution is key to maintaining clarity, especially since these prints are often viewed from a distance. A DPI (dots per inch) between 150 and 300 is recommended. While small prints require 300 DPI, large prints like banners and exhibition graphics are typically fine at 150 DPI. Anything lower, and you risk pixelation, even from afar.

File Formats

PDF: Ideal for preserving vector elements, such as text and logos, at any size without loss of quality.
TIFF: Perfect for maintaining high image quality, though file sizes can be hefty.
JPEG: Convenient for smaller files, but be cautious of compression settings that could reduce sharpness.

2. Setting Up the Design File

To ensure a flawless print, the design file must meet certain technical criteria. Here are some essential points your clients need to follow:

Canvas Size: The design canvas must match the exact dimensions of the final print. For example, if a banner is 2m x 1m, the file should reflect those measurements.

Colour Mode: Always design in CMYK, the colour mode for printing. RGB is suited for screens but can cause colour discrepancies when printed.

Bleed and Trim: Include a bleed—extra space around the edges to account for trimming inaccuracies. Additionally, maintain a safe distance between critical elements (like text or logos) and the edge to prevent cutting off important details.

Single vs. Double-Sided Prints: For products like feather flags or banners, make sure clients specify whether the design will be printed on one side or both, so artwork can be properly aligned.

3. Safe Zones, Bleed, and Cut Lines

When designing for large format, it’s crucial to respect the layout guides:

Bleed Area: Extend backgrounds and design elements slightly beyond the final cut size to avoid unwanted white edges.

Safe Zones: Keep important details well within the safe zone to avoid accidental cuts during trimming.

Stitch Lines: For banners or fabric displays, ensure any text or logos are placed far from stitching or finishing areas like grommets or hems.

4. Using Templates and Tools

To simplify the design process, we provide downloadable templates for each large format product which can be located in the Artwork Templates section on their individual product pages or alternatively can be found here in our Product Templates area. These templates include guides for bleeds, safe zones, and dimensions, reducing the chance of errors during production.

5. Final Review: Preparing for Print

Before submitting artwork, encourage your clients to conduct a thorough review. Small errors can become glaring on large prints, so attention to detail is essential:

– Ensure contact information and other critical text are accurate.

– Perform a spell check to catch any last-minute mistakes.

– Have a second set of eyes review the artwork—fresh perspectives can spot issues you might miss.

At we1print , we offer a free 30-point artwork check for all customer orders. This ensures that key details like resolution, file format, safe zones, and colour modes meet the necessary standards before going to print. To learn more about this check, please read our blog dedicated to the 30-point artwork check.

By adhering to these best practices, you can assist your clients in creating visually stunning large format prints that leave a lasting impression. Whether you’re guiding clients through the process or handling the design yourself, the right preparation will ensure high-impact results every time.
